The reader will find it very differently laid out from traditional histories of the Anglo-Saxon Church. This is not primarily about the great figures at the top, but about the churches at the bottom, and those who founded, staffed, and sometimes destroyed them. Anglo-Saxon verse either celebrated the deeds of a hero or were a lamentation a.
Most surviving Anglo-Saxon poetry dates from C.E C.E. These poems were copied down many years after they were composed c. One other early Saxon building of note is the church at Brixworth, Northamptonshire (c). Interestingly, it was built re-using old Roman bricks.
It is also unusual for its length; at nearly feet long Brixworth is large compared to other early Saxon churches. Anglo-Saxon Architecture. There are very few churches that are mainly Anglo-Saxon (and none that are % so).
For a start, there were very few stone churches at that time. Anglo-Saxon churches were mainly of wood and thatch. Those that were stone were often “minster” - or monastic - churches that have over time become parish churches. Built in a Romanesque style the nave (main body) of the church is entirely Anglo-Saxon in construction and dates from the 7 th century.
There is also a stair turret from the 10 th century. The only noticeable part of the church which isn’t pre-Conquest is the tower and spire from the 14 th century. By the eleventh century, almost every estate had a church of stone or wood, built and endowed with land by the local thegn. The long and short quoining method instead places long stone blocks with their lengths oriented vertically, between smaller ones that are laid flat.
This load bearing quoining is common in Anglo-Saxon buildings such as St Bene't's Church in Cambridge, England.  References. Odda's Chapel is a tiny Saxon chapel now built into a medieval timber-framed farmhouse which obscures the eastern chancel.
The building is a simple two-cell structure with characteristic Saxon long and short quoins. It is very plain inside, but retains its original chancel arch and a number of Saxon windows.

The tower is a good example of its date. The long-and-short works of the quoins, the double belfry windows with moulded balustrade shafts separating the lights, and the great arch leading in the church, are all characteristics of late Saxon work, though the two beasts on the imposts of the arch are not paralleled elsewhere.
The short nave is also mid C11, and more definitely Anglo-Saxon as it has long-and-short quoins, much renewed, at the corners. There is a blocked N door with long-and-short quoins, with a two-light, square-headed Perpendicular window in the upper part.
